Montreal: Day 3

Third Day: TreeHouse
Both of us really wanted to check out the touristy stuff, like the biodome, so we walked to the subway. The subway, coupled with the fact that bus’s run 24 hours, makes the public transit in Montreal 100% better than Winnipeg. Nice.

After getting off the subway, we walked to the Biodome. It’s actually a really neat place. There are 4 environments; Tropical Rain forest, Canadian shield, Maritime coast, and Arctic (READ: Penguins).

It was actually really fun. My camera’s memory card was completely full because of the night before, so we ended up taking pictures with our cell phones. By far the best part: penguins. It was like Happy Feet, but good, and without Robbin Williams ruining the fun.

Next came the insectarium, which I mispronounced “Insectesairumasuarus” several times. I’m not really that into bugs, but it was still really neat. Inside, they had an ant colony set up. However, the way they built it was really cool. The ant colony was beside a small tree, and the food for the ants was located at another tree a couple feet away, connected by vines. They had it set up so that the ants had to walk along the vines to get food for the colony. Watching them march in single file along the vines is actually really fun. After looking around at some of the live scorpions, scarabs, and walking leafs, we took off into the botanical garden.

We check the map for directions to the various gardens. Toxic plants, Japanese rock gardens, tree house…

Treehouse? The concept of a house in the trees, with stuff to climb on intrigues me. I look closer at the map, the treehouse is located on the other side of the garden from where we are. The idea of climbing on shit wins out, we start are walk.

My legs were falling off when we pasted the halfway mark.

“You know, this could just be a pavilion about trees.” Iain says as we walk.
“What? I’m pretty sure, treehouse, means a house in some trees. With climbing.”
“We could turn back right now. My feet are killing me.”
“No, we must press on.”

We pass the last bend. I can see the building…

Apparently, birch is really light, while oak is heavier. This is due to mole—DEAR GOD ALL I WANTED WAS TO CLIMB SOMETHING!!!

We walk back. I can barley stand when I collapse on to my hotel bed.

Good: penguins. Bad: ants. Man I hate ants.

That sounds like the most fun day of the trip (though shopping sounds exciting too). Oh, and that whole concert thing.
